While looking over my small vinyl collection, I decided to head back to Spotify to check the list of new releases. Just yesterday, a very cool track titled “Jazz Diggers” by 7&Nine and MYR was released. I think this is exactly the kind of composition I would want in my vinyl record collection, to experience its “crunchy” taste with my ears and literally feel the sound.

Sound Architecture

First and foremost, I want to highlight the piano. It sounds as if it were just brought back by Marty McFly from 1955. Warm, dusty, and slightly distorted notes will satisfy any lover of vintage aesthetics. On a record or cassette, it would sound many times more atmospheric. And it becomes even more so when guitar chords join the piano, distorted even more than the keys. In my personal opinion, a “Cassette” simulator plugin played a significant role in this vintage distortion. I’ve played around with one myself, and I think only it can simulate the “fatigue” of tape on instruments so qualitatively.

Why Listen?

The main “hook” of this work lies precisely in this vintage quality. Nostalgic warmth combined with modern rhythms always feels fresh and inspiring. 7&Nine and MYR are certainly not the pioneers of this style, but they produced the work very well, clearly separating the modern (drums and bass) and the past (piano and guitar). Paradoxically, this division is not felt at all while listening to “Jazz Diggers.” On the contrary, we are given a high-quality track that will find a resonance in our daily retreat. In my opinion, the Sphere of Hip-Hop label caught a golden fish with this one.

P.S. If you appreciate this blend of jazz elements and lo-fi rhythms, be sure to check out our review of Simber.
