In those days when the world seems to lack bright light, and a sunny disposition hides behind grey clouds, you instinctively look for it elsewhere. Perhaps in a warm conversation with your mother, a favourite flavour, or, like me, in a new lo-fi track. Recently, my good friend, GorillaSoundz, released the mini-album “memento mori,” and its eponymous track simply flooded the entire space around me with light. I decided to share this feeling, this review — like a warm ray of sunshine.

“memento mori” begins with drums, and this start immediately evokes an internal response, reminding me of the early, uplifting compositions by Bob Marley, who also often liked to start with percussion. And just like that, you are already attuned to something cool and bright. The expectation is instantly met: the golden trumpet breaks in — bright, rhythmic, it leads the melody. It is picked up by atmospheric, ringing, Jamaican-style drums that carry this sunny, reggae-like vibration. And then, like a magical element, the flute is woven in, immersing you in a soft, warm trance.

This is an incredibly layered piece of work. Listening to it, you feel as if an entire orchestra is playing under the sensitive movements of a talented conductor. But this richness never tires. It is well thought out: between the brass instruments, light, soft synthesizer inserts from the electric piano appear, which, like a breath, break up the general palette and prepare you for a new, even more powerful rhythmic explosion. This is especially noticeable near the end, when all the instruments step-by-step, thoughtfully join this shared dance, causing a remarkable uplift.

And you know what’s most amazing? The title — “memento mori” (Remember that you must die) — contrasts with the absolutely life-affirming sound. For me personally, this track and the entire album is not a grim reminder, but a mockery of the tragedy of death, but in the kindest tone. It’s a powerful message: “Yes, I remember that I will die, but nothing is eternal. And while I’m alive, I’m going to bloody well enjoy all the colours that life gives me!”

That is why this music has a special power: it doesn’t just lift the mood, it inspires you to live and feel. In the modern world, especially living in Ukraine — it is a necessary, warm, friendly reminder of the value of every single sunny day.

P.S. If you’re searching for more meditative, lo-fi inspired sounds to chase away the grey, dive into another recent electronic gem: the highly recommended “Halcyon Days” by Resonant Circuits.
