Happy Thursday. The week is slowly winding down, and that pre-weekend mood is starting to take over. Naturally, I’ve been looking for something to speed up the transition to “chill mode.” My search led me to a new collaboration between Freedust, pianist Mark Aanderud, and guitarist Alex Sid titled “Distant Waves.” Spoiler alert: this track sounds exactly like a Saturday morning.
The Soundscape
The “runway” for this track is a very soft beat paired with a thick, rich bass. It provides a solid foundation without feeling overwhelming, allowing the melody to land smoothly. The first to touch down at this “weekend airport” is Alex Sid’s guitar. His style feels like a blend of reggae and tropical lounge—fingers sliding lazily across the strings, creating slow, singing motifs that instantly transport you to a poolside with a pink flamingo floatie.
Alongside the guitar, you can feel Mark Aanderud’s presence. His keys and bright electric piano drift through the arrangement like a half-forgotten memory. The synths add a layer of softness, weaving micro-sounds into the main melody. Interestingly, the track is built over the actual sound of ocean waves, which producer Daniele Carmosino tucked under the instrumentation to give the atmosphere a sense of physical space.
Why Listen?
“Distant Waves” is a gradual invitation to unwind. It’s the kind of piece you can play in the middle of a stressful Monday to feel miles away from your desk. It’s a place where warm waves lap at your feet and a gentle breeze finally lets you take a deep, clear breath. Warm and effortless, it’s a sonic reminder that the weekend is just around the corner.
