Spring has already crossed the three-week mark, yet it still finds itself in a tug-of-war with winter’s lingering chill. Against the backdrop of this seasonal standoff, German artists Ima Dyllow and Ilzki have released their new collaboration, “cold.” Releasing a track with such a distinctly “frozen” sound just as everyone is craving sunshine is a bold move—one that allows us to view spring not just as the arrival of warmth, but as the moment when the last shivers of winter finally fade.
The Soundscape
The title “cold” serves as a direct spoiler for the track’s sonic DNA. From the very first seconds, the intro stands out with a sharp, almost metallic violin. Its strings seem to tremble in the frost, sending a literal chill down the listener’s spine. This instrument reappears throughout the piece, constantly pulling us back to the core concept.
A lively, syncopated beat weaves through this coolness. The percussion acts like a heartbeat, trying to warm the track’s “body” and keep it from freezing over entirely. However, the true star of this icy landscape is the piano. Its heavy, crystalline notes feel like a sonic adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen. Each keystroke feels like a moment of musical crystallization.
Why Listen?
Ima Dyllow, who transitioned into Lo-Fi from a rap and beat-making background, masterfully uses his sound design expertise to craft mood-driven stories. “cold” is a reminder of the winter routine we’ve just left behind. When warmth becomes the norm, we often take it for granted. But through the prism of this track’s chilly atmosphere, the emerging spring sun feels particularly intense and “hot.”
