I often come across experimental works where artists rethink genres, and today’s focus is a perfect example. In the new Future Garage release from Ukrainian musician Bohdan Kotvytskyi, known as Melancholic Bird, you can clearly feel his Lo-Fi roots. His track “Thaw” is built on a bold idea: ditching the overly long intros typical of the genre to focus on the pure “juiciness” of the sound.
Sound Architecture
“Thaw” is a highly unconventional track for the genre, clocking in at just two minutes. In many Future Garage pieces, the intro alone could last that long, but here, the brevity is a strength. Light piano notes lead into drums backed by a warm sub-bass, while the percussion carries a subtle “dusty” texture. The overall rhythm, with its distinct syncopation, feels like a direct nod to the Lo-Fi world.
Throughout these two minutes, the piano dominates, evoking a sense of relief that lives up to the track’s title. The second half of “Thaw” introduces characteristic vocal chops and extraterrestrial pad layers. The depth expands, and the “icy heart” of the composition thaws even faster as the layers unfold.
Why Listen?
If you ever find yourself fast-forwarding through long Future Garage intros to get to the beat, this track is your remedy. By adopting the concise structure of Lo-Fi, Bohdan has condensed the genre into its most vibrant moments. It’s a brilliant reimagining for the “TikTok generation”—a gateway into a beautiful, introspective genre that plants the seeds of a “thaw” in even more hearts.
