I adore compositions whose moods can be interpreted in various ways. Today, I want to share a work by U.S. artist Lashondra Maddox, known as slowmo.shon. Her track “Sun Kissed You” (from the EP slo.fi collection: seasons in slowmo.shon) evoked very different moods and let my imagination run wild.

Sound Architecture

Seeing the title, I was prepared for warm, sunny vibes, but the beginning held a surprise. After the vocal samples, I instantly fell in love with a pulsing pad that feels borrowed from the best of Chillwave—sounding as nostalgic as it gets. However, this pad set a mood that was anything but sunny rather, it evoked a sense of sadness mixed with the “pain of life.” In this musical poetry, there are faint piano notes that appear occasionally to enrich the experience and amplify the melancholy. The track deliberately dives into lo-fi beats and sprays of arps, if not for the beat, I would 100% categorize this as a Chillwave track.

Yet, this sadness dissipates instantly with the addition of the guitar. The track finally gains the mood I expected from the very beginning, turning into the sunbeams that wrap around you as promised in the title. By the end, the track takes on a sort of bittersweet mood, where the initial sadness transforms into peace. The same instruments, accompanied by recordings of the sea, become filled with a stoic philosophy.

Why Listen?

Sun Kissed You is worth your attention because it sounds like life itself, transitioning from one state to another. While transitions like the one at the 0:52 mark sound somewhat loud and complex, the shift in moods is perhaps the smoothest I’ve heard all week. Don’t be startled if the title doesn’t match your initial expectations. Listen to the end and enjoy this transformation just as you enjoy changes in your own life—even if, at the beginning, it’s not the life you expected.
