Sometimes, the deep dive into an artist’s world begins only after the track is chosen for publication. This time, I didn’t even suspect that Mexican producer Fernando Torres Barradas was building an entire universe around his audio works. Through The Last Nation project, he tells captivating stories where every song is a scene. “STARRY MORNING” describes the sunrise over a post-apocalyptic city (at least, that’s how I interpreted the lore of his “Neoncity” universe).

Sound Architecture

The work is masterfully written, and you can truly feel a morning freshness in its sounds. It’s hidden in the combination of light, slightly distorted bells that sound like an old music box. Meanwhile, the piano, with its gentle progressions, provides a solid structure for these melodic bells to shine.

The guitar feels warmer and more dreamy. Its “singing,” lingering effect balances the cool freshness of the other instruments with soulful warmth. While such sounds are common in lo-fi, here the guitar is essential for balance—without it, the track might have felt too monotonous.

Why Listen?

I’m not sure if it’s because I didn’t sleep well or due to the influence of the bass, but despite the title, “STARRY MORNING” works both ways. It can either lull you into a light slumber or be the perfect companion for greeting the early dawn.

This versatility only expands the track’s audience, and the project’s deep lore will be a treat for those who appreciate the stories hidden behind the music. It’s the perfect soundtrack for those quiet transitions where the past lingers, but the future gently unfolds before your eyes.

P.S. The freshness and melancholy of “STARRY MORNING” call to mind another significant work in our catalog. Check out the review of Jonny Abbey.
