Sometimes the best way to create something new is to go on a “digital hunt” through your own archives. American producer It’s Rodney rediscovered an old track once assembled in the Caustic 3 mobile app, extracted the stems, and rebuilt them from scratch. I don’t know how raw the original was, but the result, simply titled “:)”, turned out to be that rare kind of work that instantly pierces the armor of skepticism.

Sound Architecture

For lo-fi, this story begins boldly. Instead of the expected vinyl crackle, we are greeted by expansive cinematic pads and a piano playing somewhere on the edge of neoclassicism. All of this is “seasoned” with clicky percussion. It sounds like scattered glass marbles or the rhythmic clicking of a typewriter, adding a remarkable tactility to the track. If you were looking for lo-fi, it’s hidden in exactly these details. The beat itself gently joins the fray by the 50-second mark.

The real trigger for me here is the synthesized arpeggios. In Rodney’s hands, they sound like a living analog greeting from the 80s. There is that special “imperfection” in them which, combined with a deep sub-bass, creates a foundation where pure kindness blooms. It’s a sound that feels physically warm, as if you’ve placed your hands on the sun-warmed hood of an old car.

Why Listen?

:)” is the perfect time machine that manages to transport you into a state of absolute serenity in just two minutes. Here, modern clean sound intertwines with the nostalgic “grain” of synths, creating a space to escape from global chaos. It’s Rodney reimagined an old piece so that it resembles the very smiley face in its title: simple, sincere, and incredibly attractive. It’s a musical antidepressant with no side effects, reminding us that even in the darkest times, we still have the right to two minutes of inner peace.
