After an exhausting weekend, a strong cup of coffee is the only way to claw back into the work rhythm. The first release on my desk was “Glass Flowers” by a familiar trio: Jonny Alias, Ookia, and Joy Beat. As I sipped my caffeine, I realized I had drifted through the entire track without even noticing. It was a strange realization: despite a total lack of novelty or experimentation, the time passed effortlessly.
It made me wonder—perhaps looking for something revolutionary in Lo-Fi is the wrong approach entirely? The philosophy of this genre often lies not in breaking new ground, but in creating a comfortable, predictable backdrop. The artists have delivered exactly that: a high-quality, calm piece of music that doesn’t demand your undivided attention.
The Soundscape
If you’re familiar with Jonny Alias’s signature style, the rhythm won’t surprise you. It’s slow and syrupy. Light percussion hits every two seconds, merely marking the direction of travel and allowing the airy piano and e-piano layers to fill the room. The sound evokes an image of a dense forest where warm sunbeams pierce through the canopy, illuminating colorful butterflies in their golden light.
The role of that solar warmth is played by Alex’s (Ookia) delicate electric guitar. Its chords are as expansive as the overall tempo. Together with the Danish duo Joy Beat, who specialize in “Sleep Lo-Fi,” the musicians have crafted a dreamy state that literally stretches time, giving you no reason for concern.
Why Listen?
As a curator who has heard thousands of similar tracks, “Glass Flowers” isn’t a groundbreaking discovery. However, I chose it precisely because of how well it fits the genre’s canons. It’s a professional piece of work that sounds like an old friend: you know everything about it, and that’s exactly why it feels so cozy. If you’re looking for a solid addition to your playlist that will simply “do its job” for hours—this is it.
P.S. This isn’t Jonny Alias’s first appearance on our blog. If you enjoy his consistency and soft sound, we recommend checking out our previous review.
