Lately, the lack of spring warmth has pushed my mood toward melancholy. When the sun hides behind the clouds, you have to find alternative sources of “Vitamin D,” and today I’ve found a literal solar battery in audio form. This is the release by American producer Kelvin McKisic titled “Mowed Grass.”
Kelvin’s story is as captivating as his music: a former electrical engineer who played violin, drums, and trombone in his youth, he only began seriously composing at 56 and decided to publish his work at 64. This maturity and multi-instrumental background have culminated in high-quality jazz-hop that breathes with genuine freedom.
Sound Architecture
From the very first seconds, the composition blooms with a vibrant array of instruments. At the center is an electric guitar “narrative” that speaks to the listener with warm, summery chords. Beneath it lies a fresh, funky groove of drums and percussion, anchored by a supple bass guitar.
The electric piano adds a special playfulness, occasionally vying for attention and creating a dialogue with the guitar. This is top-tier jazz-hop that is hard to categorize as standard lo-fi or “study beats.” The instrumental parts are too rich, and the rhythm—despite a moderate BPM—encourages movement rather than concentration over a textbook. I suspect the famous Lofi Girl wouldn’t be able to stay still; she’d definitely get up and dance to this.
Why Listen?
The author compares the track to a warm afternoon breeze gliding over freshly mowed grass. The sensation of sinking your toes into a lawn is captured with surgical precision. The strength of “Mowed Grass” is that it doesn’t lull you to sleep—it wakes you up.
Kelvin McKisic has created a sonic tapestry that doesn’t just fill the silence but provides a physical sensation of summer. It is the perfect soundtrack for stepping out into the backyard with a cup of coffee. If you’ve been looking for music to pull you out of spring apathy and make you snap your fingers—this is it.
