The days are getting longer, but it’s only a delay of the night, which inevitably claims its power. In those moments when the city lights are swallowed by the thick darkness of a spring evening, one naturally reaches for Future Garage—to find answers, or perhaps to think of nothing at all. In search of this silence, the new release from Belgian artist Kenn Dust, titled “Mindrift,” became my perfect guide.

Sound Architecture

The fullness of this release is felt instantly. There are no long build-ups, you are immediately thrust into a whirlwind of breakbeat rhythms and rich percussion. Beneath this surface lie lush, cinematic pads with a level of drama you’d expect from a Christopher Nolan score.

Alongside them, a silky sub-bass and wandering vocal echoes call out to one another like fragments of memory. Kenn Dust masterfully draws the listener into an introspective state, creating the effect of plunging into icy water—where the outside world fades, leaving you alone with your own reflection.

Why Listen?

Following the trend of condensed Future Garage structures—similar to what we discussed in the recent review of Melancholic Bird, “Mindrift” stays brief and impactful. It’s a professional choice: the emotional intensity is so high that the short timeline prevents “burnout,” leaving you in a state of weightless lingering instead. It is a drift through unresolved thoughts toward the shores of peace. Even writing this review was difficult, as this track whispers: “Leave everything for later, just be here and now.”
