March is finally starting to deliver on its promises. The first rays of sun aren’t just shining they’re tickling the skin with that specific “warm prickle” that makes you squint with a smile. The snow, which felt like a permanent winter fixture, is gradually surrendering, turning into thin, silver streams of spring water. It’s the perfect moment for Resonant Circuits and Blue Hippo to drop their latest release—an audio version of a Studio Ghibli film titled “A Ray Of Light.”
Having had early access to this piece, I spent quite some time trying to figure out why it feels so… physical. Resonant Circuits (Jannik Jivung) from the misty shores of Malmö and Blue Hippo (Fede) from sunny Menorca are far from newcomers. Their years of experience and work with the Liminal Shapes label have allowed them to craft a sound where every rustle carries weight.
It all starts with a live piano. And when I say “live,” I mean an almost intimate proximity: you can actually feel the hammers striking the strings and hear the mechanical click of the keys. This isn’t a sterile digital preset it’s a living, breathing instrument that moves in unison with the listener, reminiscent of Thomas Newman’s watercolor-esque scores. The guitar doesn’t take center stage instead, it paints in short, flickering strokes, while a soft bass guitar provides a warm foundation for this delicate structure.
The magic is tucked away in the details: the subtle squeak of fingers sliding over acoustic strings, kalimba-like bells, and airy sweeps. The latter sound like wind captured on a handheld recorder during one of Jannik’s walks along the Malmö coastline. The percussion consists of muffled beats that sway slowly, like leaves on a tree, filtering the piano’s light into the right channels.
This collaboration is a prime example of how two masters can dissolve the boundaries between their styles, leaving only pure emotion behind. The track ends abruptly, fading out mid-sentence. It leaves a strange, philosophical silence in its wake. Was that warmth enough to thaw your inner winter? Or perhaps this ray is just the beginning of something bigger—something we fear losing the moment we close our eyes? This sense of unfinishedness forces your hand toward the repeat button, trying to catch the light that just slipped through your fingers.
P.S. If this spring vibe resonated with you, we also recommend checking out our previous piece on the transition of seasons: Denada & Resonant Circuits — Winter and Spring.
