I have reviewed Steve Nguyen’s work many times, and he continues to fill the lo-fi genre with his signature cinematic compositions. His latest release, “cold water at 3 am,” sparks deep reflection on how music intertwines with our daily lives.

Sound Architecture

This is a remarkably gentle piece. Everything revolves around peaceful piano notes that flow through the track like night dew on green leaves. Compared to Steve’s previous works, the instrumentation here feels more minimalist and the structure simpler. However, this is just an illusion. Nguyen maintains the high bar of quality he has set for himself. If you listen closely, the background is filled with subtle melodies that enrich the space while the piano and drums hold center stage.

The drums deserve special mention. Credited to Steve and Jorge Humberto Brenes (who also handled the synthesizer), the beat and percussion sound incredibly original. Thanks to live recordings and excellent panning, it feels fresh even after thousands of other lo-fi tracks.

Why Listen?

Every Steve Nguyen track feels like a lived story. With “cold water at 3 am,” a compelling thought emerges: perhaps Steve isn’t creating this cinematic sound for the music industry’s sync markets, but rather to score the “audio series” of the listener’s own life.

This track feels like a romantic, deeply human episode in one’s personal journey. It finds synchronization not with a film, but with your own reality. It’s a lived moment you don’t want to let go of.

P.S. Steve Nguyen continues his audiovisual storytelling. To understand where this series began, we recommend revisiting our review of his previous work.
