Zak Lessman, the California-based artist known as Neologisticism, continues his sonic expedition through the streets of an imagined Neo Tokyo. His latest release, “Neo Tokyo Suburbs,” leads us away from the neon-lit center and straight into the quiet outskirts. It is the kind of music that makes you want to stop running and consider buying a few square meters in this peaceful neighborhood.

Sound Architecture

This time, the sound architecture relies on a bassline that feels unusually viscous for the lo-fi genre. Yet, it doesn’t overwhelm, instead, it grounds the track, making it feel tangible and real. The rhythm can be compared to a favorite childhood toy—slightly “worn by time” but incredibly familiar. The sound hits like a warm memory the moment it touches you. Gentle electric piano further enhances the dreamy atmosphere of a residential area, where there is no rush, only the calm and stillness of empty evening streets.

The real highlight of this piece is the synth arpeggio, which seems to descend to earth from outer space. Zak appears to have established his signature style by weaving cosmic chillwave textures into a classic lo-fi canvas. The warm beat and these dreamy synths are perfectly balanced, as if born for each other to stabilize the overall sound.

Why Listen?

Neo Tokyo Suburbs” is a masterful piece of production. Walking through these sonic outskirts leaves you with a dual sense of groundedness and something far greater. Listening to this track, you find yourself walking barefoot on the warm asphalt of your home street, yet with your head tilted back toward the stars. It is the perfect soundtrack for moments when you want to feel the vastness of the universe while staying rooted to your own ground.
