Pacing the corners of my home, I listened to Sam Ojalvo’s track “moody” over and over again. Each time, I tried to grasp what exactly was so calming about this wonderful lofi piece. To find the answer, I realized I needed to “put the sound on shelves,” organizing the layers based on my own experience and intuition.
Sound Architecture
Right from the start, I felt a cozy atmosphere painted with the colors of an electric piano dissolving into light percussion and a dusty record effect. But the brief snippets of flute and saxophone leading into the drums make it clear: the peace I felt a moment ago was just the beginning.
In fact, it was only a prelude. From there, Sam progressively plunges the listener into an even greater euphoria of calm, using piano cascades, light synth layering, and a vast array of sound effects and instruments that are almost too many to list.
Why Listen?
As you sink into this apogee of musical ecstasy, the tranquility transforms into something warmer and more intimate thanks to a deep, piercing bass. Personally, I feel that the bass is the main protagonist here – it creates a private space around the listener.
I would compare this sound to a romantic setting, whether it’s at home by candlelight or in an upscale restaurant. The sensations the track evokes are equally pleasant in both scenarios. I hope you’ll listen to “moody” not in solitude, but in the pleasant company of friends or loved ones.
P.S. Sam Ojalvo continues to impress with his ability to create a soft, confident atmosphere. Be sure to check out our previous review of his work.
